Vegetables for a radiant skin

Dr Sonali Chaudhury, Consultant – Integrative Dermatologist and Cosmetologist

The secret to great skin, lies in good eating. Time and again, nutritionists extoll the virtues of fruits and berries to achieve great skin. But the humble and not so glamorous vegetables can help you equally in achieving a radiant, smooth exterior. Here are some vegetables and their skin-loving properties.

SWEET POTATOES

Sweet potatoes are an excellent source of vitamin A, in the form of beta-carotene which protects our skin from free radicals. They are also a very good source of vitamin C which helps in skin repair. Sweet potatoes also contain manganese, copper, pantothenic acid, vitamin B1, B2, B3, B6, potassium and phosphorous that keep the skin happy.

PUMPKIN

Loaded with fruit enzymes and alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) that increase cell turnover for bright, smooth skin. Pumpkins contain antioxidant Vitamin A and Vitamin C to help soften and soothe the skin and boost collagen production.

YELLOW BELL PEPPER

The Yellow bell pepper’s bright combination of Vitamin B6 and carotenoids can help prevent wrinkles and increase blood circulation to your skin, helping you look more youthful. Bell peppers are also great to fight acne.
CARROTS
Carrots are loaded with skin vitamins and minerals. But eating too many carrots can result in an excess of beta-carotene that can, in fact, discolour the skin.

KALE

Packed with Vitamins A, C and K, lutein, iron, and antioxidants, vitamin K in kale helps to reduce dark circles under your eyes and ‘tightens’ your skin, thereby reducing fine lines and wrinkles. It also helps to reduce the swelling and scars that may form after medical procedures. Lutein, also promotes collagen production. Both vitamin A and antioxidants repair skin tissue while also preventing free-radical damage.
Kale beauty products are also known to be beneficial for detoxification and can help keep our skin hydrated and clean out your pores to give it a healthier look.

TOMATOES

The ubiquitous tomato, is a skin legend. It can help cure large pores, treat acne, soothe sunburn, brighten skin tone and revive dull skin. Lycopene in tomato, fights cellular damage and skin inflammation. Tomatoes work wonderfully well as an astringent and improve facial texture.
