Busting the myth – Botox and Fillers

Dr.SonaliChaudhury: Consultant – Integrative Dermatology and Cosmetology, Smart Metabolic Anti-Aging Centre

When it comes to looking smooth and flawless, Botox and Fillers can be your best friends. Unfortunately, while these procedures are harmless and quotidian, there is still a lot of misinformation and rumours about the procedures. Here are some popular myths that might clear the air – and your skin (if you finally go the Botox way!)

MYTH 1: It is painful

Contrary to popular belief, getting a Botox or Filler injected is hardly painful at all. The procedure itself uses extremely fine needles to inject the components, after the application of topical anaesthetic creams. Post procedure icing also makes it extremely comfortable for the client, with the entire procedure almost akin to a slight prick; that is completed within 15-20 minutes.

MYTH 2: It is Permanent

NOT AT ALL. The results of Botox and Filler injections are not permanent. Typically, a Botox effect stays for 4 to 6 months, before dissolving into the skin; while Fillers stay for 1 to 1 ½ years depending on the type of fillers used. Both Botox and Fillers are made from tested substances, a lot of which already exist in your body (hyaluronic acid) so they are completely safe.

MYTH 3: It can erase all wrinkles

I would like to hope so, but No! There are two types of wrinkles – Dynamic Wrinkles that appear when we express and Static Wrinkles that stay on your face irrespective.
Botox works very well for the dynamic wrinkles. For static wrinkles, a combination therapy is required which includes threadlifts and fillers. Botox is primarily a preventive procedure, while fillers is more reconstructive and reparative.

MYTH 4: It is for old people.

Really? All of us have a desire to look young. And when you look young, you feel younger! Botox, is a preventive procedure that should be done before the wrinkles start appearing on your face so that the procedure has a more potent, long lasting effect. Once the aging process starts, your skin requires a combination therapy – that Botox alone would not be able to remedy.

So start young with Botox to stay young!
